A native of Illinois, Cheryl Childers has lived in La Quinta, CA since 1992. She has a twin sister and a younger brother.

Cheryl attended Kent State University, but left college early before earning her degree. She has worked in office management in law firms, a public relations agency, at an escrow company, and for a hotel.

It is Cheryl's plan to obtain her BA in education so that she can pursue her goal to teach or counsel students. She and her son are both enrolled in College of the Desert in Palm Desert, CA.

Her leisure time interests include golf and acting. She strives to find a balance and harmony in her busy life of working, parenting, attending college, and assisting her own parents.

What does it mean to you to be awarded a GoGirl grant?

Being awarded a GoGirl grant has meant positive validation that my abilities to pursue a college education, at my age and stage of life, are worthy. It made me feel proud. Even at my age, I remember calling my parents to tell them the news. The award has improved my self esteem and feeling of self worth.

Describe your motivation and inspiration for continuing your education and career goals at this stage in your life.

My motivation and inspiration for continuing my education and career goals at this stage in my life came from participation in a bereavement group after my beloved aunt passed away from cancer in 2005. This support group provided a safe haven for personal and private introspection. I acknowledge my aunt for the spark and the support group for fanning the flame.

What advice would you offer other women who are considering going back to school to make a career change?

My advice to other women considering going back to college to make a career change is to become active, bold and confident. Make a plan. Go step by step and apply to The Girlfriend Factor for a GoGirl grant. The financial support, phone calls, mailings, emails, Christmas card and gifts are encouragement for success from women who care.
